The burner can run on a number of fuels: here it’s using firewood, which takes a bit longer than gas.

Note no smoke is visible from the flue although you can see the fire is burning. Once going properly on firewood, all you see is shimmering air coming out of the flue. However it doesn’t quite pass the very stringent NZ Clean Air Act requirements, so can’t be used in a few specific central urban areas. Gas is fine in all areas.
